Every year, the Bethpage Federal Credit Union partners with Island Harvest Food Bank to distribute turkeys to Long Island residents in need. The tradition is set to continue with the 14th annual Bethpage Turkey Drive on November 18th, 2022. The organizers ask that you show your support through the contribution of frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items, and monetary donations. These resources will go to Island Harvest to help families in the community enjoy a holiday meal.
Island Harvest is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief nonprofit, and has been serving the Long Island community since 1992. Through their charitable work, the organization delivered over 15 million meals in 2020 and continues to increase the number of volunteers and expand programs that assist our neighbors.
Food Insecurity continues to impact Long Island in 2022
Amidst inflation and the sustained effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity has continued to be a growing concern for New York residents, especially in marginalized communities and neighborhoods where food insecurity was already high. City Harvest reports that in 2022, visits to food banks and soup kitchens have increased by 69% compared to 2019.
In response, Island Harvest has continued to double its efforts by increasing staff and food purchases and shifting toward providing more direct support to communities through home delivery programs and distribution events. By partnering with Bethpage Turkey Drive, Island Harvest hopes to strengthen this outreach and provide many local families with the opportunity to enjoy a holiday meal.
How you can show your support this November
You can make a monetary contribution online if you want to help alleviate hunger this season. Each $35 donation will help support one family’s access to a nutritious holiday meal. You can also bring monetary donations, frozen turkeys, and non-perishable items to the Bethpage main branch at 899 S. Oyster Bay Road, Bethpage, NY 11714.
Donations will take place between 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM. Donors should place items in their trunks before arrival for contactless delivery.
