Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

A number of agencies such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and non-profits like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) work continuously through various means to reduce impaired driving.

Efforts made in 2011 to reduce drunk driving showed improvements in 27 states which experienced drops in alcohol-related fatalities. Texas showed the greatest reduction with 57 less fatalities, and New York, South Carolina and Tennessee ranked next, showing a reduction of 30 fewer fatalities.

NHTSA and MADD recently launched a campaign program called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” which was a nationwide effort during the second half of December, 2012 that lasted through New Years day.

Because traffic crashes and deaths typically increase over the December holidays, it was a prime time for law enforcement and other organizations to focus on crackdown efforts.

NHTSA and MADD teamed up and promoted an ad campaign and stiffer law enforcement to reduce alcohol-related crashes. Part of the campaign included running ads that showed invisible law enforcement officers observing people who were alcohol impaired getting into their cars to drive. The promotion focused on showing that officers see drunk drivers before they see officers. More than $7 million went into television and radio ads to promote this crackdown on drunk driving.
